Sivas University Of Science And Technology Attended The “STEM FOR GIRLS” Project Launch.
On Friday, February 11, 2022, the “Problems in the Orientation of Female Students in STEM Fields and Suggestions for Solutions” Report Launch was held at the Labor and Social Security Education and Research Center (ÇASGEM) Conference Hall in Ankara. Sivas University of Science and Technology also participated in the launch with four names from its academic staff. “Dr. Pervin Erdoğan” from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, “Research Assistant Hatice Aktaş” and “Research Assistant Özlem Ceviz” from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, “Research Assistant Müyesser Çerçi” from the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences, took part in the launch as female academics and represented Sivas University of Science and Technology.
The English word "STEM", which determines the scope of the project, is formed from the initials of the words science, technology, engineering and mathematic and it is used as an inclusive term for these disciplines. In parallel with the developments in the aforementioned disciplines, STEM education has been gaining more and more importance in recent years. In the STEM education model, which aims to transform theoretical knowledge into practice, an integrative and interdisciplinary educational understanding in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics is dominant. STEM aims to develop creative thinking processes by providing a project-based education for students and pushing them to research and question.
In this way, students (young people) who will complete their education and participate in business life will have the ability to think more solution-oriented and interdisciplinary.
On the other hand, “STEM for Girls” is a project developed to encourage more women in STEM fields in Turkey. STEM for Girls was first prepared by Hitit University as part of the "Erasmus+ Youth Program Project" and has been entitled to receive funding from the European Union. The main aim of the project is to encourage female students who are in their final year of high school more to participate in STEM departments at universities. In the project, which the European Commission provided a grant of "20,320,00 €", SBTU, Sivas Provincial Directorate of National Education, Ankara Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports and OSTİM Foundation are in cooperation. The first event within the scope of the project was held in Çorum under the name "STEM Summit for Girls" between 5-8 July 2021. Senior female students participating in the event had the chance to get information about the undergraduate and graduate education of STEM departments of universities, attend workshops and panel events on STEM, and interact with female mentors working in STEM fields.
After the launch program of the project, which took place on February 11, the cooperation of the aforementioned institutions will continue on the subject, and also efforts will be continued to ensure that more women take part as active participants (student/employee) both in the STEM departments of universities and in the sector.
